FAQs for applicants

Thank you for your interest in the YAT internship program! We are excited to have you join our team and contribute to the GES community. Please use this document for answers to your questions regarding logistics of the internship program. If you have any remaining questions that are not answered here, please send them to yatyouthactionteam@gmail.com and we will respond as soon as possible.

NOTE: Our internship program follows the guidelines and recommendations for large groups/events during  COVID-19. The health of our partners and interns is our number one priority and our decisions are made with the intention to keep them and their families safe and healthy.

  • What is an internship?

A program to provide students with an opportunity to gain work experience and skills in a specific field. They are designed to expose interns into the profession that they are interested in and develop the skills needed to enter a professional work environment.

  • Why are internships academically and professionally beneficial?

Internships help students gain valuable professional experience and the ability to network with professionals in many careers which is beneficial long term. Internships are a stepping stone into the workplace and not always available to students in our community for many reasons. The barriers are presented as a lack of compensation, mentorship, and opportunities to continue applying their knowledge.

  • What will I be asked to do during the internship?

The tasks each internship includes are specific to the organization they are hosted in. Typically, interns are asked to assist in larger projects or work alongside current employees to develop workplace skills. Depending on the needs of the organization, interns may be asked to work remotely, in the office, or a combination of both.

  • How will the internship be adapted during the Covid-19 pandemic?

As mentioned above, all internships will follow the guidelines and recommendations for large groups/events during COVID-19. The health of our partners and interns is our number one priority. Every decision is made with the intention to keep everyone and their families safe and healthy. Precautions will be added and removed as deemed necessary by government and health officials.

  • What are the eligibility requirements?

The eligibility requirements are minimal so that any GES student can apply to participate in these opportunities. Each applicant should submit an application containing personal information, previous involvement with internships, a letter of recommendation, and an interview. Everyone who submits an application will receive an interview. The applicant will be evaluated on the quality of written answers, letter of recommendation, and their interview answers.

  • Is this internship opportunity compensated?

Internships provided by the YAT Internship Program will always be compensated because we believe unpaid internships negatively impact interns from our community. It will either be compensated with a stipend or in academic credits. Please check our website for the compensation of the internship you are interested in.

  • Will I have a mentor/supervisor?

All interns will receive a mentor/point person at the organization they will be interning at. It is important that interns are supported and guided while they navigate a new workplace and institution.

  • What is the time commitment for this internship opportunity?

The length of the internship and time commitment is dependent on the organization that hosts the intern. All interns should expect to commit a required amount of weekly hours. In general, the organizations hosting interns commit to being flexible because they are aware interns are currently students in an academic setting.

  • How competitive is this internship opportunity?

The spots available for this opportunity are limited and competitive. Each year the number of internships will change however each applicant will be exposed to other internships available and receive feedback to improve future applications. To learn more about how the applications will be evaluated, please refer to the next question.

  • What is the selection process and how are applications evaluated?

Each applicant should submit an application containing personal information, previous involvement, and a letter of recommendation. When an application is submitted the students will receive information to schedule an interview. Please review the application page for a set of questions that will be asked during the interview and be prepared for three on the spot questions. The interviewee will have time to ask questions, as well.

Our internships are designed to not limit students who have not had access to previous experience with internships or have perfect grades. Although we prefer to see any of your previous experience and GPA, it will not be held against your application. Regardless of selection status, all students who submit an application will receive an interview along with a rubric containing feedback on how to continue to improve their skills for future applications.

The YAT Internship Program applications are evaluated by interview members who have read and interacted with the applicant’s application. The application materials and interviews are scored on the quality of the written responses, letter of recommendation, and interview answers, as well as demonstration of the applicant’s commitment to the community.

  • Can I apply if I have low grades/ no previous experience?

Absolutely! Our internships are designed to not limit students who have not had access to previous experience with internships or have perfect grades. Although we prefer to see your previous experience and GPA, it will not be held against your application. Applications are evaluated by the quality of written responses, letter of recommendation, and interview questions.
